Vice Dean | Professor of European Law and Head of the European and Economic Law Department
Ramses Wessel is Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen and member of the Faculty Board. As Professor of European Law he teaches and publishes on various dimensions of European law, with a focus on the interface between EU law and international and domestic law, EU External Relations Law, EU Common Foreign, Security and Defence Policy and the Law of International Organizations. He is Academic Director of the European Law in a Global Context LLM and was co-Director of the Research Programme Regulatory Interaction and Multi-level Governance (RIMGO). Ramses holds an LLM in International and European Law from the University of Groningen and a PhD in Law from Utrecht University, where he also taught for many years. Before returning to Groningen, he held positions as Professor of International and European Law and Governance, and on the side respectively as Programme Director, Vice Dean, Dean, and Dean of Educational Innovation (Vice-Rector) at the University of Twente. In the latter function he was responsible for the implementation of the Twente Education Model (TOM).
As chair or member of (international) evaluation committees, he is frequently involved in the assessment of research and education at other institutions of higher education. Ramses Wessel held visiting professorships at, inter alia, the European Law Academy in Florence; Sapienza Università di Roma; Luiss Guido Carli Roma; Universidad Pablo d'Olavide in Sevilla; Université de Genève, the Academy of European Law (ERA) in Trier; the Leiden Law School; the University of Bologna; and the University of Cagliari. He has been a member of PhD assessment committees at various European universities, including King's College London, City University London, KU Leuven, University of Copenhagen, Université de Genève, University of Ghent, University of Sheffield, EUI Florence, Université Libre de Bruxelles, the University Pablo de Olavide Sevilla, and most universities in The Netherlands.
Editorial functions include: Editor of European Papers and of Nijhoff Studies in European Law; Member of the Editorial Board of SEW Tijdschrift voor Europees en economisch recht and of Europe and the World: A Law Review; Editor-in-Chief of European Foreign Affairs Review; Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Groningen Journal of European Law, and of the book series The European in International Affairs, Global Europe: Legal and Policy Issues of the EU's External Action; former Editor-in-Chief and founder of the International Organizations Law Review, of the Netherlands Yearbook of International Law and of ESIL Reflections.
Ramses Wessel participates in a number of (EU-funded) international research projects and is Member of the Governing Board and co-founder of the Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER) in The Hague; and a member of the multidisciplinary Research Groups on Illicit Trade, on Sanctions and on European Integration of the University of Groningen.
